Tombstones, also known as clamping pillars, tooling fixtures or clamping columns, are used to hold workpieces in place on horizontal machining centers. They are combined with machine tool vises for optimal accessibility to the workpiece.
Tombstones are used specifically for horizontal machining centers. They can clamp multiple workpieces for applications requiring fast production times.
Tombstones are made out of cast iron, case-hardened steel or aluminum. They can come with two, three, four or even six faces, depending on the number of workpieces to be mounted. Tombstones can be designed to use either manual vises, hydraulic vises or zero-point clamping cylinders.
Most manufacturers provide custom-built tombstones in order to fit the machine and the type of workpiece being machined.
