World first: The new Pirani sensor VSP 3000 from VACUUBRAND offers the world first fine vacuum sensor with outstanding corrosion resistance and mechanical robustness. Primarily designed for applications in chemistry laboratories and process engineering, it benefits from a ceramic-encapsulated measuring element, an embedded reference element for temperature stability and wetted parts made of high-grade chemically resistant plastics. This technological breakthrough means that the VSP 3000 is a high shock proof sensor that will even survive in the event of sudden gas bumping – a typical cause of failure for standard sensor filaments.
This new patent pending sensor design is unique in fine vacuum measurement and sets a new benchmark standard for chemical fine vacuum measurement. The new Pirani sensor VSP 3000 from VACUUBRAND can be used in conjunction with both the DCP 3000 vacuum gauge and the CVC 3000 vacuum controller respectively and offers therefore not only a versatile fully chemically resistance in the measuring range from atmosphere down to 10-3 mbar, but also the innovative possibility of accurate 2-point vacuum control within this extended range. In addition, up to four external gauge heads can be connected simultaneously to the DCP 3000 vacuum gauge for easy and cost effective multi-point measurement. With small flange connection KF DN 16 at the gauge head and a screw-in hose nozzle for DN 6 to DN 10, the sensor offers flexible connection options for existing vacuum apparatus. Finally, the VACUU•BUS™-system also allows cable extensions up to 30 m, enabling remote application usage.

A&N currently offers two styles of vacuum gauges for rough vacuum applications:
Bourdon gauges
Thermocouple gauge tubes
A&N Bourdon gauges provide '30 to 30' (30” Hg vacuum to 30 psig) range of vacuum measurement and are available in multiple flange styles. Vacuum measurement is accomplished by a mechanical process in which a copper tube changes position due to the force of atmospheric pressure acting upon it. The mechanical force moves the indicator needle and provides a visual reading of the presence of vacuum in the system. Because this is a mechanically induced reading, Bourdon gauges work reliably regardless of the type of gas present.
A&N thermocouple gauge tubes are dependable, low-cost replacement tubes for a variety of manufacturers. A cross-reference chart as well as a full explanation of their operation is available in the A&N print catalog or in the PDF version of the print catalog (see above). Thermocouple tubes are often used to monitor foreline pressure and to signal that the system has reached cross-over pressure.

General Overview :
The Pirani gauge is a roughing pressure vacuum gauge. It uses the thermal conductivity of gases to measure pressure. VG Scienta has two different types of Pirani gauge measuring slightly different pressure ranges; they are both available in a variety of styles with a range of mounting flanges.

General description
Change of pressure in vacuum systems brings about a rise or fall in number of gas molecules present and hence a rise (or) fall in the thermal conductivity of the gas. Thus the heat loss of constant voltage electrically heated filament in the system varies with the pressure.
The pirani gauge head filament has high temperature co-efficient of resistance. So a slight change in system pressure brings about useful change in filament resistance resulting in an out of balance voltage which can be read as a pressure on meter. The pirani gauge head indicates the total pressure of combined gases and other vapors in the system on the heated wire, which can loss heat to both gas and vapor molecules. The change in resistance due to temperature build-up, of a coil filament, which is supplied with constant voltage placed in Wheatstone bridge configuration, consequent to the pressure and thermal conductivity which is directly read by the gauge in terms of m.bar.
The gauge consists of the stabilized power supply and the indicating meter with the arrangement to select any of two gauge heads. Each gauge head consists of bridge and calibration elements. These heads are factory calibrated with full interchangeability. Each gauge head is provided with `O' ring coupling, to braze to customer's vacuum system.

General description
This is a cold cathode ionisation Gauge consisting of two electrodes anode and cathode. A potential difference of about 2.2 KV is applied between anode and cathode through current limiting resistors. A magnetic field is introduced at right angles to the plane of the electrodes by a permanent magnet having nearly 800 gauss magnetic field which will increase the ionisation current.
The electrons emitted from the cathode (gauge head body) of the gauge head are deflected by means of magnetic field applied at right angles to the plane of the electrodes and are made to take helical path before reaching the anode loop. Thus following very long path, the chance of collision with gas molecule is high even at low pressures. The secondary electrons produced by ionisation themselves perform similar oscillations and the rate of ionisation increases rapidly. Eventually, the electrons are captured by the anode and equilibrium is reached when the number of electrons produced per second by ionisation is the sum of positive ion current to the cathode and the electron current to the anode and is used to measure the pressure of the gas.
The Cold Cathode Penning gauge is designed on this detection method to read vacuum from 10-2 to 10-6 m.bar. The vacuum reading efficiency is enhanced by utilizing cross coupled static magnetic and electron fields of the gauge head. The gauge is stabilized to high voltage DC power supply of about 2 KV. The ionization current in terms of vacuum can be noted from the front panel micro-ammeter. All the high voltage points in the penning gauge are well insulated to eliminate any accidental contact by the user.
