A VME is a type of industrial computer bus initially developped by Motorola. The standard is recognized by the CEI, ANSI and IEEE. Its physical configuration is based on the Eurocard format.
These buses are designed for scientific and technical instrumentation, and are common in telecommunications and IT. The standardization of the dimensions of the rack and the modules, and those of bus, allows many card types to be used.
VME architecture enables connection to 19-inch backplane rack slots. These cards can be processor, data-acquisition or signal-generating cards, memory modules, power or ventilation systems. The assembly can be connected to a computer via a LAN Ethernet link.
VME buses are multiprocessor buses. Common resources are allocated to processor cards either hierarchically or via time units. The theoretical bandwidth is 40 MB/s but is actually limited by bus access arbitration.
Form factor is based upon the Eurocard. Cards are usually 3U or 6U size. The 3U version is 10 0mm x 160 mm and features a backplane connector, while the 6U version measures 233 mm x 160 mm and possesses two backplane connectors. Other sizes, adapters and transition cards also exist. Rack module space is also measured in U units; a 1U rack can only handle a 1U module.
