ball bearing A low-friction system of balls, in a ball race, that is placed between a stationary support and the moving (normally rotating) shaft that it accommodates
ball screw A mechanical device consisting of a threaded shaft that acts as a helical raceway for balls, thereby giving low friction, high accuracy, motion for the translating of rotational motion to linear motion via a screwing action
ball valve A valve, to control the flow of fluid in a pipe, that is opened or closed by turning a ball with a hole across its diameter (that allows fluid to flow when turned to be aligned with the pipe, and blocks it when turned to be perpendicular to the pipe)
band saw A saw whose blade consists of a long, flexible metal strip, bent into a closed loop, with saw teeth along one of the edges of the loop, that is pulled (perpendicularly) through the workpiece by a motor
bar feeder The process of lengths of metal bar for a machining operation
barcode reader Apparatus for converting the pattern of black and white lines of a barcode into a digital electronic signal, for processing by a computer
barcode scanner Apparatus for converting the pattern of black and white lines of a barcode into a digital electronic signal, for processing by a computer
bearing The stationary support that accommodates a moving (normally rotating) shaft
bearing unit A self-contained module, containing the bearings in place, for mounting between two moving surfaces (such as a rotating shaft on a chassis)
belt conveyor A system of rollers supporting a flat flexible belt, organized as a continuous loop, for conveying material from one place to another (around a factory or warehouse, for example)
belt grinding machine A machine with an abrasive belt for shaping the surface or edge of an object
bending machine A machine for bending sheet materials (or rods or pipes), either automatically, or giving motorized assistance to a manual operator
brake motor A device, usually mounted on the shaft between an electric motor and the reducer, that is engaged automatically when the electric current is cut off or fails
brushless DC motor A DC electric motor that does not need brushes for supplying electrical power to the rotor. This can be implemented by using an optical or magnetic commutator to generate the AC signal, using electronic circuitry, for the stator windings
brushless motor An electric motor that does not need brushes for supplying electrical power to the rotor. Notably, permanent magnet motors and induction motors fit into this class
brushless servo- motor A brushless electric motor for making a mechanical change in a servo system (a system with a feedback loop measuring, and controlling, the difference between the present setting and the desired setting)
bursting disc A normally impenetrable seal that ruptures (for instance along scored lines to avoid creating fragments) in a few thousands of a second at a specific predetermined pressure threshold, thereby providing emergency excess pressure relief (in either direction)
butterfly valve A valve, to control the flow of fluid in a pipe, that is opened or closed rotating a circular flat plate between lying across the cross-section of the flow, or turned parallel to it
