data acquisition card An electronic system, mounted on a single circuit board, that can autonomously take data from the input stream, and pass it on for recording or further processing, continuously, in large volumes, and possibly at a high rate
data-logger A device that periodically takes (digital) readings from one (or more) measuring instruments, and records each reading chronologically, ready for later use
DC / AC inverter The inverse of a normal power supply unit (PSU), it takes DC power as its input (such as from portable or emergency-use batteries), and delivers AC power at its output
DC / DC converter A type of power supply unit (PSU) that takes DC power at its input (such as from a conventional AC/DC PSU) and delivers DC at its output at a different voltage
DC drive Electrical apparatus for supplying controlled DC to the field windings of a large electric motor
DC gearmotor A DC electric motor with an integral gearbox or gearhead
DC motor An electric motor that works with a direct current (DC) supply. In generates its own alternating field, usually using a commutator
DC power supply A power supply unit (PSU) that takes electrical power (usually AC) as its input and delivers regulated DC power at its output
deburring machine A machine for removing the rough edge left after a sawing drilling or similar cutting operation
density meter Apparatus for measuring density or specific gravity. The frequency of vibration of a hollow glass tube, of a fixed volume, depends on the mass of the sample
diaphragm pump A pump in which the reciprocating piston is replaced by an oscillating diaphragm, and hence with an air or water tight seal
diaphragm valve A valve with a threaded stem that forces a compressor plug against a diaphragm, thereby preventing the fluid from coming in contact with the operating parts of the valve
diesel engine An internal combustion engine in which the fuel and air mixture is compressed in the cylinder by the piston, until it reaches its ignition temperature, at which point it combusts, so causing the hot combustion gases to press the piston out again
diesel generator set A machine for generating electrical power at its output (usually AC). The input is mechanical (in the form of a drive shaft), which is turned by a diesel engine
digital indicator An electronic device for displaying, in a digital format, the current value of a given parameter of the system
digital manometer Apparatus, with a digital display, for measuring the pressure of a gas
digital multimeter A single piece of apparatus, with a digital display, for measuring the voltage and electrical current (possibly impedance, too), at one of several ranges
diode laser A laser in which an injection current is passed through the active region of a semiconductor across the PN junction. Operating in the infrared spectral region, 2700–30000 nm
dosimeter A device for recording the amount, or dose, of radiation received since it was last initialized
dosing unit Apparatus for measuring out a particulate, powdery or liquid substance, received from a reservoir, in doses of the same weight each time
DPSS laser A diode pumped solid state (DPSS) laser that uses a crystal, such as ruby or Nd:YAG, as the lasing material, pumped by the energy from an electrical injection current
drag chain A chain into which an electric cable can be entwined, so as to support the mechanical load of the cable
drill bit The cutting head, usually with a helical form and turning on its central axis, for drilling a hole in a material
drilling center A machine, or a set of machines, with a variety of tools for drilling holes and pits, in various set-ups; complete with other accessories for protection, monitoring, measuring, etc
drilling tool A tool for drilling holes or pits in the workpiece
drum pump A pump for filling (55-gallon) drums or barrels
