Drinking water from local authority suppliers and well water from privately-owned sources show infinite variety in the degree of hardness. Depending on what the water is used for a water softening plant will be required. Raw water for various production processes will have to be softened for example if a reverse osmosis plant is operated.
Hard water sediments come about especially when the temperature is raised, for example in boiler plants, and where heat exchangers are in operation. The same effect is observable in membrane plants when concentrations increase. Elements causing hardness (calcium, magnesium, strontium and barium) are exchanged by sodium ions from a solution of cooking salt which is used for regeneration of
