These containers have been used for collecting liver (for melting), dead fish (salmon), dead chicken as well as waste from slaughterhouses and fish processing plants. Users also include pet food producers among others. The containers most commonly used for these purposes are types 400,460, 600, 660, 460E and 660E.

These containers are completely water- and airtight. The lids, fitted with the upper part of a herring barrel (including lid), are welded to the containers. The container is filled through the herring barrel opening and emptied by 180° rotation of the container by a fork lift truck.
