Firstly, it takes the high frequency, unregulated electrical power output from the Turbo Generator (TG) alternator and processes it into a more useful form, ie a fixed DC output for vehicle applications or a 3 phase grid connected, 50Hz, 400VAC output for stationary power applications.
Good speed control of the TG and the ability to change the running speed as engine operating conditions vary is important for optimising the performance of the TG.
So the second important function of the Power Electronics is to control the running speed to maximise efficiency. It does this by varying the load on the TG, eg if more power is available in the engine exhaust and the TG begins to accelerate, then the Power Electronics will sense the change in speed and increase the load and hold the speed constant.
