Multiple Ways of Finding an Axle Weight
While there are many ways to determine the axle weight of a tractor trailer, some, of course, are more ideal than others.
Using a standard truck scale, axle weight may be determined by first stopping the truck with only the front axle on the scale. The scale operator records the weight and presses TARE on the indicator. The driver then pulls the truck forward so that the drive axle is on the scale. The weight is recorded and the operator presses TARE. The truck is finally driven completely on the scale and the final weight is recorded. This method can be quite time consuming and subject to operator error.
Another method is to use a single module axle scale and weigh one axle at a time. Cardinal manufactures several different scales that can accomplish this. This method is not "legal for trade," but does give a reasonably accurate weight for each axle.
