In the event of a lightning strike on the overhead line, the use of arcing horns on a pole type transformer can result in very high and steep over voltages which classic winding configurations cannot withstand. CG Power Systems has developed the steep wave transformer based on Scandinavian specifications: the electrical stress on the insulation structure is held within acceptable limits by a more linear distribution of the impulse voltage through the winding. In other words, a simple design modification has resulted into a higher impulse voltage withstand capability.
