Dove prisms are used as image rotators or as 180° retroreflectors.
When light enters the prism through one of the angled faces, the dove prism provides a 180° inverted image with no deviation. As the prism is rotated, the image passing through will rotate at twice the angular rate of the prism.
When light is incident on the hypotenuse, the dove prism acts as a 180° retroreflector. The reflected light exits parallel to the input light and is 180° inverted but not reversed.
Dove prisms can be used with parallel or collimated light.
