The infrared LED is a LED that doesn't emit visible light, but instead emits infrared light. Infrared light is invisible to the human eye thus, making it useful for remote control. Usually two infrared LED's work in tandem to create a send-and-receive system, in which one infrared LED is an emitter and the other, is a receiver.
