The sorter consists of a number of carriers fixed to a drive belt. In the carriers unit loads can be put/ dropped and will be following the track (shape as a carrousel) below this track of carriers the destination boxes / chutes etc are been positioned and a certain carrier will be opened above the targeted destination while unloading itself.

Trays are actually holding the items to be sorted and will transfer and drop these at the allocated discharge. There are two styles of trays (split trays and tilt trays) and these come in a variety of sizes and configurations (single, dual, twin and quad).
