Toroidal power transformer Gebrüder FreiGeneral
Toroidal transformers offer numerous electrical and structural advantages. The ideal physical design offers the optimum in terms of minimising weight and the amount of space. The preferred magnetic orientation of the toroidal core (which consists of a grain-oriented magnetic steel strip) runs in the direction of the magnetic flux along its entire length. Overlaps and air gaps are avoided, making the magnetic field practically ideal. This results in optimum efficiency; at just 1.1 W/kg, the iron losses are extremely low. Consequently, only very low magnetising currents occur, which helps explain the superb thermal characteristic. Furthermore, the fact that the windings are evenly distributed across the entire iron core means that heat loss can be dissipated effectively.
