Modular data acquisition system
JDSU

Based on JDSU's patented photonic power technology, the OPDL-16 is an intelligent, modular, stable, low-power and noise-immune data acquisition and power delivery system for sensors, transducers and other remote data communications devices.

One major application is instrumentation for current or voltage sensing in high voltage electric power substations, where accurate and quality metering (e.g. 720 A at 110 kV or above) and protection (surge as high as 18,000 A) are necessary to maintain the integrity of the HV network. The OPDL-16 is divided into a remote unit at high voltage potential and a local unit based in the substation control room or an existing control enclosure.

The OPDL-16 provides a number of key advantages over today's conventional sensing technologies. The use of fiber optic cables isolates the current transducer or sensor from ground potential. Compared with conventional oil or SF-6 gasfilled HV magnetic current transformers, the fiber-based data link remains in operation during a blackout, as the power is delivered by fiber from the local unit.
