A shaft seal makes a rotating shaft leaktight where it passes through a wall. The crankshaft seal ensures a perfect tightness of the engine crankcase at both ends.
This seal has a sealing lip in friction contact with the shaft; its special design (hydrodynamic ribs) keeps the fluid within the environment to be sealed. The lip is fixed to a metal armature. The lip material may be elastomer or PTFE.
The static tightness is achieved using a rubber outside coating on the armature.
