Most Lumber operations use an open air area where lumber is stored on stickers to get dried while exposed to the elements. Several hundred bundles could be stored at such an Air Drying Yard.
From there those bundles are being selected to go in the kiln for drying to the desired final Moisture Content (MC).
It would be very desirable to know of the approximate MC of each Bundle when selecting a Load for the kiln, in order to select bundles that have approximately the same MC. With a wide range of MC in the kiln, the drying time for the bundles with low moisture content is increased due to the longer time required to dry the bundles with high moisture content. Efficiency can be increased by a large amount by having a narrow range of MC distribution within a Kiln Charge.
