A winding staircase can have either one or two stringers.
If there is only one stringer, then this is fitted either on the
inside or in the middle. If in the double stringer design,
the two stringers are on the outside and the inside.

Winding staircases are not only the most elegant breed of
the stairway species; in the winding escape design, they
also offer additional safety on account of their larger
diameter and wider treads.

Few decades ago, the design of a staicase oriented itself rather by historical and oversized models. Today's staircase are often reduced to the minimum requierments. For mounting several floors, most people prefer taking the elevator anyway.
