Industrial gas: nitrogen
Messer Group GmbH
Nitrogen constitutes approximately 78% of the atmosphere. At ambient temperature, nitrogen is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas. Though it is non-toxic, high concentrations of it can displace oxygen which is needed for breathing. Under atmospheric pressure, nitrogen liquefies at a temperature of -196°C.
Special safety guidelines must be followed when handling nitrogen, whose chemical formula is N2. In industry and research, nitrogen is used as a coolant or as an inert gas. After use, it is returned to the atmosphere unchanged.
