Industrial gas: oxygen
Messer Group GmbH
Air consists of 21% oxygen, which liquefies at -183°C. At atmospheric pressure, liquid oxygen only occupies 1/854 of its gaseous volume. That is why large quantities of oxygen are transported and stored in cryogenic liquid form. The most important property of oxygen is its reactivity. There are only few elements with which oxygen will not react.
Oxidation and combustion processes are speeded up significantly in an oxygen (O2) enriched atmosphere compared with normal air. This property makes oxygen indispensable for the metabolism of many organisms, which is why it is used in a large number of water treatment and environmental technology applications.
