They are employed to switch off the operation of an electric circuit, in case of over-heating.
Its mechanism includes a quick-action (Snap-action) bimetal element that opens an electric circuit through switching its contacts, at a particular preset response temperature. It resets automatically after the temperature at the place where it is installed drops.
