Attritor mills are used for milling (e.g., particle size reduction) as well as dispersion of fine particles under controlled conditions. It is widely used in metal, ceramic, inks, paints and coatings industries. The operation of an attritor mill is simple, the process is faster and more effective than the ball mills.
The material to be ground and the grinding media are placed in a stationary, water-cooled grinding container without any pretreatment or premixing. Commonly used grinding media types are stainless steel, chrome steel, tungsten carbide, alumina, silicon nitride and zirconia. Teflon coated steel media is also used to prevent contamination. Then, the mixture is agitated by a cross-armed shaft rotating at high speeds. Shear and impact forces on particles result in an efficient particle size reduction as well as dispersion of a suspension.
