Design and Functions
The V-ribbed belt is a further development of the Vbelt, and is used in modern engines above all. It has ribs running in a lengthwise direction. The engine accessory units are likewise driven by the belt. These include the alternator, the cooling water pump, the air conditioning compressor and the power steering pump.
The tension of the V-ribbed belt is adjusted for the respective strains by means of a mechanical or hydraulic belt tensioning system. Idler pulleys are used to route the belt around the various accessories. Used as damper idlers, they can also help control belt span vibration (collision).
