If a considerable amount of dirt is expected in the return oil from the machine or system, it is beneficial to place a reverse-flow filter between an oil collection reservoir and the main reservoir. The reverse-flow filter is frequently combined with a magnet filter to filter out steel chips.

A return chamber can also be placed in the reservoir to filter the reverse flow. The return chamber is separated from the oil reservoir by a strainer which also attains some degree of coarse filtration.
