They are manufactured in dry or oil immersed types. Taps can be added upon request. It provides a capacity to transmit a high current within a short time. Therefore thermal and dynamic forces are dwelt on in design. If the auto transformer is to be initially used as a reactor, they are designed with air gapped cores. Saturation risk in the core is taken into account in design.
