The E44 is a measuring device used to test the stability of plain and filter cigarette ends. The stability of the cigarette ends is determined by the strand length and the width of cut of the tobacco as well as by the dampness, packing density and the diameter of the cigarette. To simulate the mechanical handling of cigarettes during the production process, the cigarettes are subjected to a rolling and falling motion in a "cigarette cage" for a certain period of time. The quantity of tobacco dropped out of the ends is an indication of the stability of the cigarette ends.
