Meggitt presents piezoelectric accelerometer. This device is a mechanical assembly comprising of several piezoelectric shapes, such as squares, rectangles, or discs, and a seismic mass. Essentially, it is a mass spring system with high resonant frequency.
Upon application of pressure, electric output is produced by this piezoelectric material. On the contrary, upon application of electrical signal, the material changes its dimensions. This piezoelectric effect is used by an accelerometer for conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy.
This system is useable in the longitudinal axis in case it is a compression mode sensor. If it is a shear mode sensor, it can be used in the transverse axis. The benefits of both the shear- as well as compression mode accelerometers are combined by a patented push-pull mechanism.
