What is honing? Honing is a precision finishing process that refines a machined metal workpiece surface by removing small amounts of material using an abrasive rotating instrument. It is typically used to refine internal bores, improving dimensional accuracy, geometry (roundness/straightness/taper) and surface finish.
How it is fabricated The honing tool is inserted into the workpiece and rotates and translates to remove material. Constant coolant is applied to cool the tool and evacuate swarf. The tool diameter is adjustable to maintain contact between the honing sticks and the interior diameter of the workpiece.
Advantages - Higher accuracy: tight tolerances (published values down to ±1 µin / ±0.025 µm)
- More consistent: computer-controlled processes deliver repeatable results
- Higher surface finish: capability to reach ultra-smooth finishes (Ra values down to ≈2 µin / 0.05 µm; capability cited Ra < 0.1 µm in certain processes)
