Apart from high cutting speed, HSM represents a process for carrying out operations in particular methods as well as for high-accuracy production applications. HSM does not always mean machining at high spindle speed. Various HSM applications are carried out at medium spindle speeds using large cutters. During finishing, HSM is executed on hardened steel at speeds and feeds, which are usually 4-6 times higher than traditional methods.
Usually HSM is done on taper 40 machines. HSM is also High Productive Machining in parts of small size. This includes right from roughing to finishing to super finishing of parts of all sizes. The importance of HSM will increase as the components become more net shape (NS).
