There exist today cutting-edge technological systems – referred to as GEOTHERMAL SYSTEMS – that exploit energy from the ground for heating and cooling. The mechanism is activated by means of an electrical machine, called the heat pump, that draws heat from the ground. The same machine produces sanitary hot water as well as refrigerated water for cooling where necessary in summertime. Geothermal energy is conveyed from the ground to our homes by means of geothermal probes. They may be the horizontal type, which cover vast surfaces at the minimum depth required to guarantee a constant temperature, or the vertical type, inserted deep into the ground. The choice depends on the stratification of the ground, the amount of surface area available, the performance targets and other engineering aspects.
