Heat shrinking is a well know technology for permanent joining of materials. More recently it has become an accepted way to provide superior holding of cylindrical cutting tools in holders for high speed machining. The shrinking is based on proportional temperature expansion of solid material. The effect to the chuck of increasing temperature causes the inner diameter to increase in size. The cutting tool is pushed into a heated and expanded bore of the chuck, which exerts a high radial clamping force as it contracts to normal size at room temperature.
The temperature difference between the shrinking chuck und tool is important for removal of the tool. A shrinking machine ensures the safety handling.
