A polarimeter is a laboratory instrument which measures the rotational angle of polarized light passing through an optically active substance. The manual type is the oldest, simplest and least expensive, but the quality of the results depends on the operator's skill. In newer models, measurements are made automatically by the instrument's electronics, increasing accuracy and repeatability.
