Differential pressure sensors indicate the difference between two pressures either visually or in the form of an electric signal.
Such sensors are used in different types of industrial processes, in hydraulics and pneumatics, in water treatment, in ventilation and in the automotive realm.
Differential manometers use a flexible capsule whose movement reflects the applied pressure differential, indicated by a needle on a gauge. Other sensors use the modifications of electrical parameters induced by a moving part or an element's deformation.
Resistive and inductive sensors have a moving component. This can be a potentiometric assembly or a magnetic core sliding in a coil. Resistive sensors are robust and adapted to adverse conditions. They are very often used as the sensing elements of strain-gauge bridges.
Capacitive and piezoelectric sensors use a deformable element. Capacitive sensors are stable and linear, but more sensitive to high temperatures. Piezoelectric sensors require a charge amplifier and are sensitive to vibrations and shocks.
Measurements can be transmitted by a 0-5 V signal, a 4-20 mA signal, or via a field bus.
The measurable pressure range and tolerance limits (in bars, pascals or psi), the measuring speed, safety elements and the nature of the test environment will be important choice factors. In hydraulics, take into account the possibility of water hammer overload.
