An operator terminal is a human-machine interface for the control of a machine or an automated system.
These devices are used to monitor processes and to intervene, if needed. They are found in all industrial branches, including production and vehicle assembly lines.
The terminal has an LCD screen with controls or a keyboard, or a TFT infrared or resistive touchscreen. The device is shielded from vibrations, electromagnetic interference and splashes for safe functioning in harsh industrial environments. Many models have a very bright screen with a wide viewing angle to facilitate use.
The device is linked via a PROFINET/Ethernet fieldbus, PROFIBUS, CanBus or ModBus. Some have a multi-protocol interface. RS232 or RS422 serial ports are available for programming, the connection of a printer or access to comma-separated value (CSV) data.
Terminal function can be organized by page, with the possibility of password protection. Visualization software generates graphic interfaces. The device can manage alarms and provide event history and trend data. Many use the Unicode standard for programming in many languages. This facilitates application export.
Terminals are characterized by screen type, level of protection and network connection ports. The screen can be LCD or TFT, some with touchscreen capability.
