In recent years, new cycles for the preparation of painting plastic components have been developed, leading to complete systems very similar to those used to paint other materials.
A feature of these systems is the aesthetic result necessary, which requires special attention for the filtering of the air.
The car industry has given a great boost to the development of the systems. On the one hand, the use of plastic bumpers, hoods and mudguards has made paint manufacturers develop formulations capable of respecting the car specifications and, on the other hand, has led systems engineers to find solutions with automatic cycles that can ensure quality as well as extremely high production.
PROS
- Excellent finish
- Constant results
- Low cost/piece
- Possibility of changing colour
CONS
- High investment cost

Solvent-based liquid spray painting systems
Painting with liquid spray painting products offers a wide range of solutions, thanks to the countless cycles possible, the characteristics of the paint (solvent- or water-based, mono-component or bi-component etc.).
Pre-treatment is decided by the type of material and the state of the surface, associated with cycles of series application (typically application of bases/primers + enamels and/or final protective coat).
According to the piece, the anti-corrosion or aesthetic finish aspects are privileged.
In general, solvent-based painting products require simpler treatment cycles compared to water-soluble painting products. Continuous or cell plants can be distinguished, or static plants with floor conveyors.

With this efficient and cost effective process, the small parts to be coated are fed into the encapsulated rotating drum, as bulk material. One or alternatively two spraying automates spray the coating material uniformly onto the small mass produced parts, which roll off one from the other. These parts may consist of various plastics, elastometers, metals or wood. Either water or solvent based lacquers can be used.
ROTAMAT R 90 C
The flagship of the model range, the ROTAMAT R 90C, has got a new standard design. Encapsulation of the drum as well as various automating components increases the spectre of applications.
This premium system is perfectly adapted to individual requirements and guarantees highest flexibility and productivity. The drum can be anti-adhesion coated with PTFE and equipped with five quickly exchangeable drums (as an option). No matter whether simple, delicate or geometrically complicated parts have to be coated, parts which leave the R 90C are “ready to install”. The unique shape of the ROTAMAT spraying drum, destined for a “real” processing volume of 75 litres, the parameter-controlled angle of inclination as well as variable speeds are perfectly, computer-controlled, adapted to the rolling behaviour of the small parts. The parameters are reproducible and are, combined with the spray quantity control, the basis for optimum application of lacquer.

Powder coating equipment : MACH-JET
Reliable, ergonomic and performant. MACH-JET has been specially designed for companies looking to improve their powder coating application. This has been achieved by improving the overall efficiency of the operator.
MACH-JET is a new cart design using revolutionary materials. This allows for easy mounting, provides storage areas and has an integrating air gun for quick powder cleaning. Its plastic design makes cleaning very easy.
MACH-JET is a very light gun, which integrates controls on the handle from where the operator can choose (with only one hand) from 4 preset characteristics of application. The powder flow can also be controlled from the handle. Three luminous diodes permit to the user to visualise the program in use. This is exclusively available only on MACH-JET.
A rotating connector below the handle makes the user’s movements easier, it protects the powder hose from pinching, the couplings are precise and fatigue is reduced. This special device allows a quick release for any maintenance operation.
MACH-JET is a very user-friendly control module that is very easy to work-with. The control setup permits work to be conducted immediately with the use of preset operator programs. The operator can adjust these preset programs if desired.
The whole module is integrated on the front part of the cart. It is mounted on an inclined plane so that the operator can have easy access to the readout.

iControl® Integrated Control System
Stop The Waste And Take Control with iControl.
Now you can stop the waste and take control of your powder coating operation with Nordsons iControl integrated control system, featuring closed loop digital flow control, automatic gun triggering and reciprocator control.
Traditional open loop controls lack repeatability and don't compensate for incoming air pressure changes at the powder pump. With closed loop flow control, like iControl, changes in compressed air input are measured and converted in to digital signals, then sent to a proportional valve.
This valve then compensates for varying pressure by changing the airflow to the pump accordingly - resulting in repeatable powder output from the gun and uniform film build on the part beng sprayed.
The technology provides digital control of all application parameters and gun movers through a single, user-friendly operator interface.

Simple dipping painting systems
This is the simplest system of application, with the piece being painted by dipping. Normally this solution is used for protective purposes, in cases where an aesthetic function is not required.
Painting by dipping has undergone considerable development with the advent of water-based paints, consequently eliminating the risk of fire.
|
|
Anaphoretic dipping painting systems
These are dipping painting systems where the transport of the paint particles takes place by an electrical effect. The piece acts as an anode and attracts the paint.
The system allows penetration and therefore total coverage, including of recesses, with uniform thicknesses. It is widely used, together with cataphoresis, in the car sector as the base coat for sheets.

These are dipping painting systems where the transport of the paint particles takes place by an electrical effect.
The piece acts as a cathode and attracts the paint. The system allows penetration and therefore total coverage, including of the recesses, with uniform thicknesses.
The process has the same characteristics as anaphoresis, only the polarities change (in anaphoresis the piece acts as an anode) and so different paints are used.
According to the paint, greater resistance to corrosion can be obtained and today the cataphoresis system is preferred in the car sector as an alternative to anaphoresis.
PROS
- Total penetration and cover
- Excellent resistance to corrosion
- Possibility of high production
- Uniform thicknesses
- Absence of drops
CONS
- High investments
- Impossible to change colour
- Specialized personnel are required to check baths

Powder painting represents the optimum solution for various industrial components and is increasingly used thanks to the total absence of emission of solvents, the total recovery of the overspray and the easiness of automatic application.
The typical system is made up of a pre-treatment tunnel, a drying oven, a mono-colour or colour change booth, polymerization oven, overhead conveyor; alternatively for large-sized components, treatment cells with step advance are used.
PROS
- Excellent surface resistance
- Automatic application
- Manual application with unskilled personnel
- High productivity
- Recovery of overspray
- Solvent-free
CONS
- Difficult to apply on very heavy structures as the polymerization requires the piece to reach the temperature of 160 180° for 15-20 mins.
- It can often not be applied to details that are already assembled, again because of the high temperatures
- Uneconomic if many colours in small batches have to be handled
- Not applicable to materials that cannot exceed certain temperatures
