A lifting gate consists of a vertically pivoting bar which blocks vehicular passage when in the closed, horizontal position. The bar swings up to the vertical to permit entry or exit. Both manual and automatic models exist.
Lifting gates are used in a variety of security settings:
- Access to residential neighborhoods
- Access to private or public parking facilities
- Access to dangerous or secure areas
- Toll booths
- Bridges, tunnels, level crossings, etc.
The bar of a lifting gate operates via an electromagnetic or hydraulic system. Power requirements are limited by use of a counterweight or spring to counterbalance the weight of the bar. The bar and its mechanism can be reinforced to resist vandalism. In case of a power outage, the bar can be unlocked with a key and operated manually.
Choice of a system will depend on the length of bar needed and the level of security required. Energy source (24 V, 230 V, hydraulic, etc.), opening speed and frequency of use should also be considered.
