A torque wrench is a tool used to control the amount of force applied when tightening a nut or a screw. Mechanical versions are operated by hand, while pneumatic wrenches are employed when torque beyond the capabilities of muscle power is required.
These devices are used in the assembly of road and agricultural vehicles, and trains, as well as in the aeronautical industry, on construction sites and in numerous additional mechanical applications. The controlled tightening guaranties reliable assembly.
Click models emit a sound when the desired torque is reached. This is set using a knob or adjustment wrench. Some versions have a clutch which releases at a set torque, preventing over-tightening. The heads or sockets are interchangeable. Certain wrenches turn in only one direction, others in both.
Simple manual versions indicate torque via a scale with a needle. More sophisticated models have a strain gauge, buttons and a digital readout. A beep indicates when the desired torque is reached. A resume of assembly operations is available, usually via a USB port. Electric wrenches can apply greater torque. Pneumatic models are used to tighten large bolts, where required torques exceed a thousand Newton meters (Nm).
Choice will depend principally on the required range of torques to be applied.
