Sheet molded compounds (SMC) body parts must have a perfect surface finish for subsequent painting. For this purpose, manual pretreatment with a carrier material is often carried out, which on the one hand is very time-consuming and on the other hand can be problematic in terms of quality. Alternatively, automatic spray systems are used, which in turn increases investment costs.
In-mold coating (IMC) with IMCoatec is an automated and reproducible process that brings a high-quality Class A surface to SMC components while reducing average production costs. IMCoatec is a single-component injection coating system that enables a chemical bond between the SMC and IMC materials and offers other benefits:
Weight reduction
Complex design geometries
Corrosion resistance
Sensors and antennas can become invisible (no shark fins on the roof)
Benefits
Automated coating injection eliminates costly mold pretreatment
Reliable and reproducible production of Class A surfaces
Simple operation and handling
Also allows injection of top coat materials
Easy integration into SMC production lines
Configurable with one or two injection valves
