Description

Overview
  • Desoutter EDU series is a fully electric drilling unit range for industrial and aerospace assembly. It supports drilling, reaming and countersinking from small to large diameters in materials from CFRP to titanium, combining modular head modules, precise motor control and process software.

Models
  • L-EDU: light/compact unit for repetitive small-hole drilling on single-material applications, prioritizing ergonomics and simple integration.
  • M-EDU: modular unit for multi-stack and critical processes; optional M-EDU-QC variant provides quick-change (QC) head interface with RFID identification.

System components
  • Controller: central unit managing motor control, head modules and safety functions.
  • Cable (umbilical): power and signal link; available in standard lengths (3 m / 5 m / 7 m) or custom.
  • Motor(s): drive rotation and feed (dual-motor architecture on M-EDU).
  • Head module: interchangeable tooling module (QC interface on QC variants) including tooling, lubrication and sensors.

Main capabilities
  • Independent control of speed and feed (dual motor on M-EDU) for consistent hole quality.
  • Modular head concept enables rapid adaptation to diverse applications and unlimited head types.
  • Integrated lubrication options including MQL support; QC heads provide automatic lubrication coupling.
  • Real-time process monitoring and data traceability for speed, thrust and stroke; data storage for analysis.

Controller & connectivity
  • Controller power options: 230 V | 13 A | 3000 W or 110 V | 13 A | 1500 W.
  • Communication: Open Protocol and MQTT; Ethernet x2 (separated networks); protected USB; IO port and stack light outputs; vacuum/pressure sensor inputs.

Motor & safety
  • Example motor control values: Rotation motor 48 V | 70 A max; Feed motor 48 V | 5 A max; Lubricant motor 48 V | 5 A max.
  • M-EDU features dual-motor configuration (speed + feed) for process optimization.
  • Safety: E-STOP Cat.3 PL d; Safe Torque Off Cat.3 PL d.

Pneumatics & lubrication
  • Pneumatic ranges: equipment pressure 0–8 bar; lubricant air 0–8 bar.
  • Lubricant control: flow 0–35 ml/min; lubricant tank 1.5 L; MQL possible with special pump tube; fully integrated lubrication on QC heads (no external hoses required).

QC head module (M-EDU-QC)
  • Quick-release head interface for fast head changes and plug-and-drill operation.
  • Integrated lubrication coupling with auto shutoff on disconnection.
  • RFID for automatic head recognition and optional front-facing RFID for geolocation-based activation.
  • Tool change: automatic jaw opening and locking-pin system for quick cutter replacement; built-in LED feedback and bumper protection.

Key differences (M-EDU vs M-EDU-QC)
  • Motor configuration: both maintain dual motors (speed + feed) on M-EDU variants.
  • Ergonomics: M-EDU-QC improves grip and handling compared with standard M-EDU.
  • Lubrication: M-EDU requires manual hose connection; M-EDU-QC integrates automatic lubrication coupling.
  • Head interface: manual on M-EDU; quick-change automatic connection on M-EDU-QC.
  • RFID/geolocation: front-facing RFID option for geolocation activation available on M-EDU-QC.

Data & process traceability
  • Continuous recording of speed, thrust and stroke during drilling; data retained for traceability and process analysis.
  • EDU Config software manages set-up and process parameters (speed, feed, lubrication, vacuum, clamping, drilling curves).

Additional features
  • Umbilical cable lengths: 3 m / 5 m / 7 m (custom lengths on request).
  • IO port, stack light, vacuum information output, protected USB for memory/feature management; vacuum and pressure sensing for process control.

Typical applications
  • Aerospace drilling and fastening operations requiring high precision and repeatability (single-material and multi-stack).
  • Industrial production lines where semi-automatic drilling, ergonomics and data traceability are required.

Technical specifications
  • Power: 230 V | 13 A | 3000 W or 110 V | 13 A | 1500 W (controller).
  • Motor control: Rotation 48 V | 70 A max; Feed 48 V | 5 A max; Lubricant 48 V | 5 A max.
  • Protocols: Open Protocol, MQTT; Ethernet x2; protected USB.
  • Safety: E-STOP Cat.3 PL d; Safe Torque Off Cat.3 PL d.
  • Pneumatic: equipment pressure 0–8 bar; lubricant air 0–8 bar.
  • Lubricant: 0–35 ml/min; tank 1.5 L; MQL supported.
  • QC head: quick-release lever, integrated lubrication coupling, RFID head recognition, front RFID option.
  • Software: EDU Config for speed, feed, lubrication, vacuum, clamping and drilling curve optimization.
