Description

Overview
The 96270A is an RF reference source for RF calibration up to 27 GHz. It provides precise signal level control, programmable attenuation and low phase noise in a single instrument to simplify calibration workflows for spectrum analyzers, RF power sensors, modulation analyzers, measurement receivers, frequency counters and high‑frequency oscilloscopes. The instrument supports self‑characterization and can store up to 30 correction profiles for different cable/adapter configurations.

Key features
  • Precise signal level and attenuation control with low phase noise suitable for RF calibration tasks.
  • Self‑characterization to create reference planes at the UUT input and automatically apply level corrections.
  • Integrated dual power‑meter readout compatible with specified thermal sensors.
  • Internal 300 MHz frequency counter and internal modulation (AM, FM, PM) to 4 GHz.
  • GPIB command emulation and MET/CAL compatibility for automated calibration sequences.

Applications
  • Calibration of spectrum analyzers (including HF models) and measurement receivers
  • Calibration and verification of RF power sensors and power meters
  • Level and attenuation calibration for attenuators, pads and couplers
  • Modulation analyzer and oscilloscope calibration
  • R&D, manufacturing test benches and on‑site calibration services

Product highlights and benefits
The 96270A delivers accurately leveled signals directly at the UUT input to reduce losses, mismatch errors and uncertainty contributions from external interconnects. The 50 Ω (optionally 75 Ω) precision leveling head provides deep dynamic range for low‑level work up to 4 GHz; the microwave output and HF leveling kit extend coverage to 27 GHz after self‑characterization. By replacing multiple instruments (signal generators, power meters, attenuators, counters) the 96270A reduces system complexity, acquisition and maintenance costs and simplifies on‑site calibration.

Configurations and accessories
  • 96270A — base mainframe with 50 Ω leveling head (leveling head O/P to 4 GHz).
  • 96270A/75 — adds 75 Ω leveling head option.
  • 96270A/HF — HF leveling kit for measurement-grade microwave leveling to 27 GHz.
  • 96270A/LL — low‑level microwave output option (extended low‑level capability).
  • 96270A/LL/HF — combined low‑level and HF kit.
  • Optional accessories: reference power sensors, HF splitters, metrology microwave cables, rack kit (Y9600), 9600FLT phase‑noise filter, transport case.

Automation and test workflow
The 96270A supports MET/CAL automation procedures, GPIB emulation of common legacy instruments and sample MET/CAL routines to reduce calibration time and enable unattended operation. Stored self‑characterization profiles speed setup when switching configurations or performing on‑site work.
