Product overview
The 96040A is a dedicated low phase-noise RF reference source designed to consolidate RF calibration workloads. It provides fine frequency resolution, leveled output, low harmonics and spurious, wide dynamic range, and internal modulation to serve R&D, production test and ATE calibration needs while reducing system complexity.

More than just an RF calibrator
For applications where phase noise, harmonics, dynamic range or modulation accuracy matter, the 96040A outperforms general-purpose signal generators. With a 1 mHz to 4 GHz range it handles the majority of spectrum-analyzer tests; for higher frequencies it complements other RF/microwave sources.

Cut the cost of your RF calibration system
The 96040A can replace many system components, lowering purchase, installation, maintenance and transport costs. Typical replacements include multiple signal sources, power meters and sensors, attenuators, filters, pads, couplers and a 50 MHz counter.

No need for additional function generators
Internal modulation (AM, FM, PM; internal and external) and sweep capability remove the need for many external low-frequency function generators used in modulation and sweep-time tests.

Designed for RF calibration
Calibration-oriented UI with dedicated keys, context-sensitive softkeys and a bright color display speeds procedures. Output levels can be expressed in power (W or dBm) or voltage (RMS or p-p) and converted between units without losing entered values.

"What you set is what you get" accuracy and signal purity
A precise leveling head delivers set signal levels directly to the DUT, minimizing losses, noise and mismatch errors. The head preserves signal integrity across a 154 dB dynamic range down to −130 dBm and supports connect-once test-many workflows.

Calibrated as a system to assure performance
The 96040A is supplied with a 50 Ω leveling head (model /75 includes 50 Ω and 75 Ω heads). Mainframe and head are calibrated together and shipped with an ISO 17025 compliant calibration certificate containing key parameter data (level/attenuation, output VSWR, phase noise). Accredited certification is available.

State-of-the-art phase noise performance
Optimized low phase noise across offsets from 1 Hz to 10 MHz; phase-noise data are included in each unit's certificate. For very wide-offset testing a 1 GHz bandpass phase-noise filter accessory (9600FLT) is available.

Selectable frequency reference I/O and sweep functions
Rear-panel external reference input lets you lock the 96040A to an external standard (for example a rubidium reference). Reference output can lock DUTs. Sweep functions support 1 mHz to 4 GHz sweeps (linear or logarithmic; stop-start or center-span).

Automation and compatibility
The 96040A integrates with automated systems and MET/CAL® Plus for extended unattended operation and increased throughput. GPIB command emulation for legacy instruments (9640A family, HP3335, HP8662A/HP8663A) eases plug-and-play substitution.
