Description

Grey Iron Castings are among the most widely used cast iron materials, named after the grey appearance of their fractured surface. This color comes from graphite flakes within the microstructure, which not only define the look but also play a key role in the material’s mechanical and physical properties. Typically, grey iron contains 2.5–4.0% carbon and 1.0–3.0% silicon, along with small amounts of manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. The carbon mainly exists as interconnected graphite flakes dispersed in the iron matrix, a characteristic that distinguishes grey iron from other types of cast iron. Compared with ductile iron, which contains spheroidal graphite, grey iron has lower tensile strength and ductility. However, Grey Iron Castings provide excellent vibration damping and superior machinability. Unlike white cast iron, which is hard and brittle due to its iron carbides, grey iron is easier to work with. Thanks to its excellent castability, grey iron is well-suited for complex shapes and large components. Its high thermal conductivity, vibration damping, and wear resistance make Grey Iron Castings ideal for applications such as engine blocks, pump housings, valve bodies, and machine bases. Grey cast iron is widely used in mechanical manufacturing, the automotive industry, and agricultural equipment due to its excellent castability, vibration damping, and machinability. Common grey iron components include engine blocks, brake drums, gearboxes, and machine tool bases. It offers good dimensional stability and cost-effectiveness, making it suitable for mass production.
