Description

Overview
The INDEX G160 is a turn‑mill center engineered for high‑productivity machining of small, complex and variable workpieces. Built on a rigid vibration‑damping grey‑cast‑iron bed with large linear guides on X, Y and Z axes, it combines stability with high dynamic response for demanding industrial production.

Key product highlights
  • Identical main and counter spindles with spindle passage Ø 42 mm or Ø 65 mm
  • Chuck diameters up to Ø 130 mm or Ø 175 mm
  • Maximum turning length up to 760 mm
  • Three tool carriers with high tool capacity (magazine and turrets up to ~120 tools depending on configuration)
  • Simultaneous machining with up to three tools
  • Powerful motor milling spindle with Y/B kinematics; motor spindle variants: 18,000 rpm / 29 Nm or 32,000 rpm / 17 Nm
  • High rapid traverse rates up to 60 m/min and high dynamic response
  • Up to 16 productive axes for complete machining of complex parts
  • Siemens Sinumerik ONE control with 18.5" touchscreen and iXpanel — Industry 4.0 ready

Machine concept and work area
The generously dimensioned work area allows simultaneous operation of all three tool carriers while minimizing collision risk. Lower tool carriers are recessed to increase collision clearance. Interior panels are steeply sloped stainless steel to improve chip flow and provide ergonomic access for operation and maintenance.

Configuration options and modular system
A modular system enables flexible equipment: selection of spindle passage (Ø 42 mm or Ø 65 mm), chuck diameter (Ø 130 mm or Ø 175 mm) and up to three tool carriers. Lower turrets accommodate 15 VDI 25 tool holders each (W serration); all stations are live‑tool capable. Motor spindle accepts tools up to 250 mm in length.

Automation and iXcenter robot cell
Optional iXcenter robot cell provides flexible loading/unloading of blanks and finished parts. It docks to the machine and can be repositioned for setup. In production mode the robot works via the machine door. The cell supports downstream processes (cleaning, measuring, labeling). Robot highlights: 6‑axis robot up to 7 kg payload, standard double gripper, pallet storage. Bar feeding supported via UNIMAG 5 and INDEX MBL76 loaders (3 m / 4 m bars).

Applications and typical workpieces
Suitable for automotive, medical, aerospace and precision engineering. Example workpieces:
  • Shift drum — Steel, Ø 50 mm x 105 mm
  • Shaft — Steel, Ø 25 mm x 200 mm
  • Gear wheel — Steel, Ø 65 mm x 37 mm
  • Pump housing — Steel, Ø 50 mm x 57 mm
  • Flow distributor — Steel, Ø 30 mm x 40 mm
  • Dental drill head — Steel, Ø 25 mm x 65 mm
  • Watch case — Steel, Ø 60 mm x 12 mm
  • Valve housing — Steel, Ø 62 mm x 38 mm
  • Tool holder — Steel, Ø 40 mm x 98 mm
  • Milling tool — Stainless steel, Ø 50 mm x 80 mm
  • Connector block — Stainless steel, Ø 55 mm x 120 mm

Cooling concept and energy efficiency
A central fluid circuit removes waste heat from spindles, hydraulics and the electrical cabinet to improve temperature stability. The INDEX cold‑water interface enables recovery and reuse of waste heat (e.g. shop heating or process water), reducing energy costs. The design minimizes conventional components (fans, temperature sensors) to increase reliability and save space.

Control and Industry 4.0
The machine is equipped with Siemens Sinumerik ONE and the iXpanel operating concept, providing ready connectivity for networked production and direct access to production data at the machine.
