Description

Overview
Devices and software for identification and traceability systems using RFID technology, dedicated to the various stages of the transfusion process. Integrated hardware and software system composed of electronic RFID readers/writers adapted to each transfusion phase and corresponding software applications for data management. Process automation and control enhance safety and ensure compliance with traceability regulations. Automated TAG read/write saves time and reduces operating costs.

System components
  • Electronic RFID readers and writers designed for the different transfusion phases
  • RFID TAG labels applied to blood bags and associated tubes while maintaining traditional barcodes as a fallback
  • RFID TLog datalogger with integrated temperature sensor placed in transport containers to record the temperature history of the load
  • H2 Reader dual portable devices for bedside checks, displaying match status, patient name and bag data; barcode fallback if TAG unreadable
  • Software applications for data management and integration with transfusion information systems

Benefits
  • Improves safety and regulatory compliance through process automation and control
  • Reduces processing time and operating costs via automated RFID reading/writing
  • Enables comprehensive traceability of donor and donation data, operator identity, bag weight, processing steps and transport temperature history

Process phases
  • Collection of donations: donor and donation data, identity of the operator and bag weight are identified. Blood bags are equipped with RFID TAG labels (barcodes retained). RFID allows association of additional history information, increasing safety and reducing processing time. Collected bags and tubes are placed in thermal containers for transport.
  • Blood bags transport: each container is equipped with a TLog RFID datalogger with a temperature sensor that records all temperatures during transport. The system ensures that storage temperature ranges required for each blood component are maintained and recorded.
  • Processing phase: blood components (red blood cells, platelets, platelet concentrates from apheresis) undergo filtration, irradiation, washing, microbiological inactivation and validation; each step is traced with RFID read/write. Storage occurs in computerized refrigerators and platelet incubators/agitors equipped with RFID for identification and traceability.
  • Transfusion phase: operator and recipient are identified (the recipient via an identification wristband with RFID). Transfusion verification is performed by reading the RFID of the patient’s bracelet and the bag for a congruity check; the H2 Reader display shows match result (OK/error), patient name and bag data at bedside. If RFID TAG has issues, the H2 Reader reads the barcode.
