Everyone is familiar with computer hard disks, but only very few people know that the heart of a hard disk is a small electronically commutated DC motor known as a spindle motor (hard disk motor). This motor carries the storage disks, which it rotates directly around its own axis (spindle). The read/write heads flying above the disks can then retrieve the digital information.
he spindle motor offers superior performance in terms of:
extremely quiet running and high running accuracy
high rotational speed, up to 15000 rpm
low acoustic noise level
long working life due to lack of mechanical wear
low electric power consumption
Spindle motors are used in all kinds of HDDs, such as:
3.5" HDDs for PCs, servers (professional storage systems), consumer electronics, e.g. video games consoles, digital video recorders
2.5" HDDs for laptops, servers, notebooks, consumer electronics, e.g. mp3 music players, digital video recorders, navigation systems
