Overview
The PCS-996 Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) family measures synchronized phasors and records dynamic processes in power systems. The series includes PMU devices and Phasor Data Concentrators (PDC). Key features include synchronized phasor measurement using standard clock signals and timekeeping capability without a standard clock. The system supports high‑speed communication between distributed PMUs and a central WAMS. A PDC aggregates data from multiple PMUs, forwards accumulated data to the WAMS control center and can provide local storage/backup of phasor data.

Functions
  • PCS-996 PMU
  • Phasor calculation: amplitudes and phase angles for Ua, Ub, Uc, U1, Ia, Ib, Ic, I1, Eq, etc.
  • Derived measurements: active/reactive power (P, Q), frequency (f), df/dt.
  • Supervision of binary signals (e.g. disconnector status, protection trip signals, PSS signals).
  • Real‑time communication: phasor data transmission to PDC or WAMS via IEEE C37.118 protocol.
  • Triggered recording: electrical quantities or binary inputs triggering recordings in COMTRADE format.
  • Fault recording: event logs including 1024 IO events, 1024 alarm events and 1024 device logs.
  • Disturbance (triggered) recording: 1024 fault reports and 1024 disturbance waveforms; waveform files compatible with COMTRADE.

  • Data concentration: receives real‑time phasor data from multiple PMUs and forwards accumulated data to WAMS.
  • Dynamic recording: local storage and backup of phasor data.


Communication
  • 2 × RJ‑45 Ethernet ports and 2 × fiber Ethernet ports; support IEC60870‑5‑103 and IEC61850; RJ‑45 ports may also provide FTP service.
  • 1 × RS‑485 serial port for clock synchronization.
  • 1 × front RS‑232 serial port for device testing and configuration.


Models Provided
  • PCS‑996: PMU and PDC variants for synchronized phasor measurement and regional WAMS integration.
  • PCS‑996A: PMU for substations; collects and records phasors and binary inputs for bus, line, main transformer, etc.
  • PCS‑996B: PMU for power plants; collects phasors and binary inputs for generators and 4‑20 mA signals (excitation, speed, governor signals). Supports two generators and two AC bays.
  • PCS‑996G: Phasor Data Concentrator receiving/storing synchronized phasor data from PCS‑996A/B via fiber; provides ≥4 independent network ports and supports communication with >8 WAMS stations; communication extendable via plug‑ins.
