OverviewStalam's Radio Frequency (RF) systems are applied to drying and vulcanization of foamed natural and synthetic polymers, primarily natural latex (including latex/SBR blends), SBR foam and hydrophilic polyurethane. Since the mid-1980s Stalam has supplied RF dryers and vulcanizers to leading mattress, pillow and foam sheet manufacturers in Europe and Asia.
Why RF is effective for foamed polymersFoamed products are thermal insulators with low permeability and slow vapour migration, which makes conventional hot-air drying inefficient. RF dielectric heating selectively heats water inside the foam, enabling rapid internal moisture removal without surface overheating, yellowing or wet spots.
Process advantages (drying and vulcanization)RF reduces drying and vulcanization times compared to conventional methods. It can replace or complement steam heating in vulcanization, reduce equipment footprint and improve process throughput and energy efficiency.
Benefits- Significantly shorter drying and vulcanization cycles versus conventional methods
- Documented energy and cost savings up to approximately 50%
- Improved product uniformity and absence of surface overheating
- Reduced equipment footprint and floor space requirements
- Greater production flexibility for varying product formats and thicknesses
- Lower carbon footprint due to improved energy efficiency
Applications and typical products- Drying and RF vulcanization of natural latex and SBR foam
- Drying of hydrophilic polyurethane foams
- Typical products: mattresses, mattress cores and plates, pillows, cushions, shaped blocks and other latex-produced items
Available solutions (product highlights)- RF vulcanizers for natural latex and SBR foam — radio frequency vulcanizer for foamed polymers
- RF dryers for latex and other foamed polymers — radio frequency dryers for accelerated internal drying
Notes on performanceRF provides selective heating of internal moisture, fast vapour migration and adjustable energy delivery to control evaporation rate and residual moisture. When applied to vulcanization it reduces processing time and production space while improving energy use efficiency.
