Description

Carbon fiber and advanced composite materials are well established in the advancement of both the safety and performance of motorsport and Formula 1, and have since been integrated into the high performance and luxury automotive markets. Toray are dedicated in investing for the next step change in advanced composite material adoption into the automotive market. We manufacture automotive components for both structural and cosmetic applications. Additionally, our global technology centres are continuing to develop the next generation of forming technologies, further enabling the advancement in the adoption of composite materials in high volume automotive programs. Lightweight Although the specific weight-savings vary depending on the location, adopting CFRP is expected to roughly halve the weight compared to when a conventional material (such as steel) is used. Improved Crash Safety Our original technology reduces the impact applied to the passenger/pedestrian upon crashing. Integrated Design With Fewer Parts CFRP allows for an integrated design, which will likely reduce the number of parts and assembly man-hours required. Improved Vibration Resistance The use of CFRP improves the vibration damping property and natural vibration frequencies. Durability CFRP has excellent material fatigue characteristics (compared to steel or aluminum). It also has excellent corrosion resistance (against rust or deterioration), oil resistance and chemical resistance (excluding certain chemicals)
