A Cylindrical Lens is a lens that focuses light on a line instead of a point, such as a Spherical Lens . One or more curved surfaces of the Cylinder Lens is part of the cylindrical surface, and the image through the cylindrical lens is focused into a straight line parallel to the lens surface and intersecting the tangent plane. The lens compresses the image in the direction perpendicular to this line and keeps it in the direction parallel to it (in the tangent plane). In a light sheet microscope, a cylindrical lens is placed in front of the illumination objective to produce a light sheet for imaging. The cylindrical lens focuses or expands light on only one axis.
