A clamp ammeter measures current flow in an AC or DC circuit. It opens for placement around the conductor.
Electricians use this instrument to verify current flow in electrical systems and machinery.
The jaws of this instrument are clamped around the conductor, completing the meter's magnetic circuit. The electrical circuit remains live and undisturbed, while the meter's insulation eliminates common-mode interference.
AC-only meters use the current induced in a coil around the magnetic circuit to calculate and display the measurement directly. Alternatively, the measurement is converted to a voltage and read on a multimeter, an oscilloscope or fed to a signal input. Most clamp meters display results as a root mean square (RMS).
Ammeters measuring DC or AC/DC have a Hall-effect sensor in the magnetic circuit, which induces a voltage in the sensor's semiconductor. The slight phase delay and the bandwidth enable the analysis of complex signals and give the true RMS. Specialized versions measure leakage current.
Initial choice is between AC or AC/DC meters. Other factors include, maximum amperage and conductor diameter, resolution and overload rating.
